Un article de l'ANSM (fin 2012) préconise d'éviter l'usage de produits comestiques à base de phénoxyéthanol destinés aux bébés (cf les lingettes).
Dans une évaluation du risque lié à l’utilisation du phénoxyéthanol dans les produits cosmétiques publiée en mai 2012, l’Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé (ANSM) préconise d’éviter l’usage de produits cosmétiques destinés aux bébés contenant cette substance.
Le phénoxyéthanol qui est un éther aromatique servant d’agent conservateur est absorbé par voie orale et cutanée. Il est métabolisé, principalement par le foie et est éliminé essentiellement dans les urines. L’ANSM considère que si les marges de sécurité concernant l’exposition à ce conservateur à une concentration de 1 % peuvent être considérées comme acceptables chez l’adulte, elles ne sont néanmoins pas suffisantes chez les enfants de moins de 3 ans. Par conséquent, pour les enfants de moins de 3 ans, l’ANSM recommande :
- une non utilisation du phénoxyéthanol dans les produits cosmétiques destinés au siège,
- une restriction de cet éther à une concentration de 0,4 % dans tous les autres types de produits (contre 1 % actuellement).
Le phénoxyéthanol fait partie de la famille des éthers de glycol. Ces éthers sont des cosolvants eau-huile utilisés dans de nombreuses applications industrielles y compris cosmétique. Ils sont susceptibles d’être présents dans de nombreux produits cosmétiques (lotions pour le corps, crèmes pour le visage, produits capillaires, produits de maquillage...).
